The Hawks picked up a host of profile players, including VFL on-baller Tyler Roos, who started as favourite after finishing tied for sixth in the league's Morris Medal.
However, Thynne (176 votes) edged out Roos (173) after playing one more game with nine.
Veteran Sam Carpenter (159), Will Nolan and Sam Murray (both 148) completed the top five.
Thynne had a reputation for silky attack, but his defence was also outstanding.
"I guess it (defence) hasn't been one of my biggest assets prior to this year, usually there's more of an offensive focus, but I thought I'd put more time into it and I was playing a different role, more wing and half-back," he suggested.
I guess it (defence) hasn't been one of my biggest assets ... but I thought I'd put more time into it.

The 25-year-old is leaning towards not returning.
"I'd love to, it's a special, special football club ... I'm definitely not closing the door completely on playing there again."
