Group homes are designed to allow people with disability to live together in a comfortable, social home environment and be independent, but still with the support of staff on hand.
Jindera's Tracy Stevens said she came up with the idea for a 10 bed group home in Jindera, when planning for the future of her son Jack.
"I'm looking for something more long term for him, because I'm getting older," she said.
"He's lived in Jindera all his life and to move into Albury would just be out of his comfort zone, he can walk around Jindera, he knows everyone out here and I would feel safe if he was out here."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Ms Stevens said there were a lot of people from across the district who would also value a group home service closer to home.
"There's at least three that I know of in Jindera and that's just local, but there's the whole surrounding area out at Walla and Henty and Culcairn," she said.
Ms Stevens said the empty block of land next to the St Paul's Church on the corner of Urana and Adams streets would be a good site for the home, due to it's central location within walking distance of shops and a bus stop.
Vicar of the Anglican Parish of North Albury, which includes the St Paul's Church, Reverend Emily Payne said building a group home would align with the parish's values.
"Tracy approached us and said would this be a possibility and this is actually perfect timing because we are actually literally asking ourselves what's the best use of that land, so I said to her 'I can't make any promises, but I'd be delighted to see a proposal from you'," she said.
"We want to do something that benefits the community.
"Disability is social justice issue and that's part of what we're on about in terms of our mission."
Ms Stevens is forming a committee to work on the project, apply for grants and find a provider to set up a home.
Member for Farrer Sussan Ley has met with Ms Stevens to discuss the idea, which she supports.
"The first box is ticked, next we need to pick up support from an NDIS or suitable housing provider who will work with the Jindera community in developing the concept," she said.
"It's early days, but I am really keen to support Tracy and her working group on this wonderful proposal wherever that might be needed."
