Joel Breewel headbutted the woman, put a hand around her neck, and pushed her into a wall before smashing her phone last month.
An argument started when he left to drink at a mate's home, and he attacked her when he returned.

He was arrested in the early hours of June 17.
The victim already had an intervention order out against him and Breewel was on a corrections order for offending against her.
Breewel returned to the Wodonga Magistrates Court on Wednesday for sentencing on charges including recklessly causing injuring, contravening a family violence intervention order, and intentionally damaging property.
He received a six-month jail term, which will be followed by a community corrections order.
