A probationary driver allegedly drove 80km/h over the speed limit in West Wodonga on Saturday in an incident police say was lucky did not end in tragedy.

The 18-year-old man had his licence suspended after allegedly being caught drink driving, speeding and carrying too many passengers.
Wodonga police officers saw a white Toyota Landcruiser perform a quick left turn onto Felltimber Creek Road about 3.35am.
"Officers followed the car and observed it allegedly accelerate to 140km/h in a 60km zone," police said in a statement.
"Police were shocked when they intercepted the car and found a P1 driver behind the wheel with three passengers, exceeding the number of permitted passengers for a P1 licence holder."

The man underwent a breath test before being taken to a police station and returning an alleged evidentiary reading of 0.081.
His licence was immediately suspended for 13 months and he received penalty notices for exceed peer passenger restriction ($496 and three demerit points), exceed prescribed concentration of alcohol ($496 and six demerit points), exceed speed limit by 45km/h or more ($826).
Leading Senior Constable Neil Hobbs said speed, alcohol and inexperience often combined to bring disaster.
"It frightens me that a young person was speeding on country roads while under the influence and carrying three friends," he said.
"With such poor driver behaviour, it is extremely lucky no one was injured or killed."
