The 22-year-old played his first game for the Pies in 21 months on Saturday as Richmond had the bye in the AFL, meaning many of their fringe players returned to State level.
But even with those stars back, Melville was still named an emergency, highlighting his standing.
"I've been mostly on the wing, playing high half-forward, probably two roles that suit me really well," he revealed.
"It's been a bit hit and miss, my good games have been really good, the poor ones really poor.
"Probably on the half-forward, I feel like I'm getting a little bit lost at times, just got to do a bit more work developing that role, on the wing I understand it really well, getting my hands on the footy and structuring up really well."
As much as Melville loves playing for his junior club in Wangaratta, he's hoping the match against Wodonga Raiders will be a one-off.
"I think so, I know next week there will be four or five spots opened up, I'd assume hopefully I can get back in," he suggested of the Tigers' home clash against Sandringham.
Meanwhile, another O and M product has just started his VFL stint.
Lavington's Aidan Johnson moved to Melbourne after signing with Werribee last month, but COVID forced the Victorian teams to be put on hold.
"I'll put my hand up for senior selection, so we'll see what happens," Johnson said.
"I'll train down there, but if I'm not named for the game, I'll come back here and play."
Johnson admits he's not sure what to do with his inaccurate goalkicking after posting 2.6 in the win over Yarrawonga.
"I've got the yips or something, I don't know what's going wrong," he admitted.
Werribee faces North Melbourne on Saturday, while Lavington is home to Wangaratta.
And North Albury is coming off its best performance.
The Hoppers lost by 48 points at home to top three contenders Myrtleford.
Their average losing margin over the first eight games was 125 points.
Teenager Flynn Gardiner kicked five goals, passing his previous best of two.
