With both teams having a bye this weekend, an agreement was reached to catch up the round nine fixture a day earlier than normal competition matches, and the timing couldn't have been better as NSW was plunged into a week-long lockdown soon after the final whistle was blown.
It was a tight contest throughout, but the hosts had the best of the early exchanges and were unlucky not to take the lead when Bella Pasquali's strike found the crossbar.
Eventually Spurs got into the game and forced a couple of great saves from Wangaratta goalkeeper Jacinta Findlay, but the score remained locked at 0-0 at the break.
ALSO IN SPORT:
The visitors continued the momentum in the second half and eventually got a goal via Grace Corrigan, when she slotted a one-on-one opportunity past Findlay.
Wangaratta came back strong after falling behind on the scoreboard, but the young Spurs held on for a rare victory against the Red Devils in Wangaratta and moved to outright second in the league.
Sunday's clash between Boomers and St Pats at Glen Park was called off due to the lockdown.
The ladder is: Albury United 45, Albury Hotspurs 24, St Pats 24*, Wangaratta 23*, Boomers 21.
Wangaratta and St Pats have another game to catch up from earlier in the season.
